Change A Headliner with Their Own Information

Approach lowering a headliner’s force field from a perspective that is not obvious. Say, for example, that you are talking with someone who is an NRA member and who tells you that it isn’t guns who kill people; it is people who kill people.

If you are against guns, you will not have any kind of constructive dialogue with this person if you try to lecture him on why he should think the same way. If you fight headline to headline, you will lose.

But you can speak to him about a genuine concern, such as the demographics of suicide-related gun violence.

First you agree, then you present the neutral information.

“I agree. You are right. It is people who kill people.

Hey, I just read a statistic that shocked me. Fifty-one percent of total gun deaths in the US are caused by suicide. I also learned that white men accounted for 70 percent of suicides. Is the NRA doing anything to help minimize the suicides of NRA members or create awareness?”
